The international community was now treating Nigeria as a pariah state that they would not touch even with a 10-foot pole. Abdulsalami Abubakar did not engage in such invidious and wicked practices as some of his predecessors in office. Mohammed Ladan Salihu, chairman of the State House Press Corps at the time told me how Abubakar surprised them one day. That is why he is being toasted today in Nigeria and around the world as a man of honour.

Jack Dorsey has stepped down as the co-founder and chief executive officer of Twitter Inc., Bloomberg reports. Twitter said in a statement Monday, however, said Dorsey will stay on the board of the social media company until his term expires in 2022. “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders,” Dorsey said in the statement. Dorsey stepped down as CEO of Twitter in 2008, but returned to the company in 2015. Dorsey has been at the helm of Twitter as it experimented with new innovations in social media including most recently live audio products and subscription services.

The Chief Executive Officer of microblogging platform Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has resigned. He announced his resignation on Monday, after 16 years of co-founding the social media company. “I resigned from Twitter,” he wrote and posted a screenshot of his resignation letter sent to Twitter. The Buhari regime had since come under fire for what many termed as a restriction of the right of expression. Millions of content creators in Nigeria, who earn their living from the microblogging site, have been affected as they are forbidden from using Twitter.

Four soldiers were killed in an attack in northern Burkina Faso, security sources said Monday, bringing the toll from two weeks of raids by suspected jihadists to at least 80. “Four soldiers were killed and several were wounded… around 10 terrorists were neutralised in a counter-attack,” the source said. The armed forces swept the area with air support, the source added. It was the biggest single-day loss among the security forces in the history of the insurgency. On Saturday, around 10 people were hurt when the security forces using teargas dispersed a rally in the capital Ouagadougou protesting at President Roch Marc Christian Kabore’s security policies.

AS fears mount over the newly identified coronavirus variant, Omicron, governments around the world are scrambling to protect their citizens from a potential outbreak by placing travel restrictions on eight African countries. One case of the Omicron variant was detected in a traveller who arrived from Namibia to the Czech Republic, according to the Regional Hospital in Liberec. European Union states have agreed to introduce temporary restrictions on all travel into the EU from southern Africa. Meanwhile, South Korea has imposed restrictions on travellers from eight southern African countries, its Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced Saturday. Foreign nationals travelling from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi and Mozambique are banned from entering South Korea, the agency said.

An attempt by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists to infiltrate Forward Operating Base, Gajiram Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday has been foiled by Land and Air Components troops of Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI. A statement issued by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu revealed that several members of the terror groups were killed in the failed attack on the base. The terrorists, having suffered several human and equipment casualties as at the time of this report, retreated in disarray. Canada said on Sunday it has detected its first cases of the new Omicron strain of Covid in two people who had travelled recently to Nigeria. “I was informed today by the Public Health Agency of Canada that testing and monitoring of COVID-19 cases has confirmed two cases of the Omicron variant of concern in Ontario,” Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said in a statement. “As the monitoring and testing continues, it is expected that other cases of this variant will be found in Canada,” he was quoted as saying by France24.com. On Friday, Canada banned travel from seven African countries over concerns about the spread of the Omicron strain. The United States top infectious disease official, Dr Anthony Fauci told President Joe Biden on Sunday it will take about two weeks to have definitive information on the Omicron variant.
