On August 6, the Federal Government renamed the Ministry of Science and Technology as Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Also, Nigeria is yet to achieve the 60:40 ratio in enrolments for science and technology versus arts/humanities, as interest in mathematics, science and technical studies is decreasing. The Federal Government’s policy and implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is not clear. President Muhammadu Buhari had in the wake of his re-election pledged to focus on education, particularly science education among girls. According to her, the lack of encouragement of young women and girls to develop interests in STEM poses a big obstacle.

Mari Pangestu (World Bank MD)For the Indonesians, after a child birth, a woman would put a salt pack in her vagina ostensibly to restore its firmness… for the African women it was: why would a woman inflict pain on herself? In effect the World Bank MD is rehashing what landed Nigeria in trouble during the SAP era of IBB. Hence it is a further means of compounding Nigeria’s financial woes and never helpful to macro-stability as feels the MD of World Bank, Mari. Mari’s model is absolutely non inclusive and could engender growth seen in GDP without making development or collective well-being of Nigerians possible. For whichever way, one sees it, for every hundred naira Nigeria earns, it is bound to set aside 37 naira for its debtors and it could increase as naira value goes down south.

Sweden’s parliament on Wednesday elected Social Democratic party leader and current Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson as the country’s first woman prime minister after she clinched a last-minute deal securing key support. Andersson will succeed outgoing Prime Minister Stefan Lofven after a total of 117 members of parliament voted for her, while 57 abstained, 174 voted against and one was absent. She had previously received the support of the Social Democrats’ coalition partner the Greens, as well as the Centre Party. Stefan Lofven resigned on November 10 after seven years as prime minister in a widely expected move aimed at giving his successor time to prepare for the country’s September 2022 general election. Despite being a nation that has long championed gender equality, Sweden has never had a woman as prime minister.
