Nigeria’s Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, says the dialogue to lift the ban on Twitter is in progress with few conditions yet to be met. While speaking about the federal government’s promise of lifting the ban in “just a few more days” in September, Mr Keyamo, in an interview on Channels Television programme, Politics Today, on Sunday, explained why the ban has not been lifted. The Nigerian government, however, accused Twitter of sponsoring dissent in the country. In his explanation, the minister, who is part of the cabinet members involved in the dialogue with Twitter, disclosed that Twitter has agreed to all the Nigerian government’s conditions but singled out “timelines” as the only hiccup. “Once those timelines come and they fulfill those conditions, Twitter will be back to business in Nigeria.

The Kogi State Commissioner for Environment, Adewale Omofaiye, on Sunday escaped being kidnapped but was shot on the leg by suspected kidnappers. The incident happened between Ikoyi and Iyara in Kogi State at about 5pm on Sunday eveningOmofaiye was on his way to Lokoja when the suspected kidnappers opened fire on his vehicle and a bullet him in the leg. An eyewitness said some other road users were kidnapped and taken into the bush by the kidnappers. The Oyo State government has partnered with a nongovernmental organization, La Vie Mot Global Mission, also known as Living Word Mission, to put together a two-day training for health workers Ona Ara and Ibadan South West Local Government areas of the state, major actors in the state primary health board as well as other stakeholders in health, on handwashing techniques. We want people to stay healthy; we want people to be able to contribute their quota to the development of society. “We are training health workers on simple hand washing techniques, on how to use the hand equipment that is deployed into their facilities, also training them on how to handle those machines. The content is not new and has been circulated as a broadcast message several times in the past. This development has sent shivers down the spines of West Africans who are still grappling with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The authorities at the Nigerian Correctional Service have confirmed the attack on the Jos correctional service. Francis Enobore, MNIPR, Controller of Corrections (PRO), confirmed the attack in a statement released on Sunday. Gunmen, suspected to be pirates, in the early hours of Sunday, attacked two oil installations, killing three and abducting seven oil workers in Bayelsa State, Nigeria’s South-south. Sources close to the affected oilfields said the gunmen reportedly shot dead two staff of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company and a personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The driver of their boat, an indigene of Okoroma community, is still missing, according to the local sources who witnessed the incident. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the new COVID-19 variant (B.1.1.529) as a VOC named Omicron, describing it as a virus of concern. This was based on the recommendation by the technical advisory group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE), an independent group of experts that periodically monitors and evaluates the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and assesses if specific mutations and combinations of mutations alter the behaviour of the virus, said WHO. The WHO in a statement said TAG-VE was convened on 26 November 2021 to assess the SARS-CoV-2 variant: B.1.1.529. “The B.1.1.529 variant was first reported to WHO from South Africa on 24 November 2021. In recent weeks, infections have increased steeply, coinciding with the detection of B.1.1.529 variant.

As killings by non-state actors continued across Nigeria, at least 24 people were killed last week (November 21 – 27). Majority of the victims were killed in the northern part of Nigeria with only two killings, from two cases, reported in the southern part. About 90 per cent of the applications by airline operators for expert quotas in their businesses have been rejected, the Federal Government has said. He added, “Government is not going to lord it on Nigeria Air how they operate, but we are warning the owners of Nigeria Air that Nigerian jobs are paramount. The minister said the Federal Government had been receiving applications from airlines requesting to be allowed to bring in airplanes into Nigeria on a daily basis. As part of an effort to strengthen and further diversify the vegetable sector, a firm, East-West Seed, Nigeria has unveiled new hybrid seed varieties to increase farmers’ yield. The hybrid varieties include tomato, pepper, pumpkin, water melon, pawpaw among others. She said the firm has a mission to improve the income of farmers through high-quality vegetable seeds. She said the company has many agronomists that are working with farmers in the field as part of extension services. A Niger Delta Environmental Advocacy group, on Friday, commenced training of hundreds of fishers on coastal environmental monitoring and advocacy, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital. Mr Ateke-Enade said the environmental rights group aimed to strengthen the knowledge base of participants to engage in evidence-based monitoring of the environment by collecting data in an empirical way. Mr Ateke-Enade, who spoke on the overview and sources of pollution, urged the participants to share experiences with participants from other communities to safeguard the environment. He said the training was timely as it coincided with two ongoing pollution incidents in two adjoining local government areas in Bayelsa. “Meanwhile, the company evacuated oil workers and left the community to grapple with the situation,” Mr Noel said.
