The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, has charged the universities in the country to retrace their steps back to the period when they usually produced sportsmen and women who later become great in one sporting activity or the other. The minister gave the charge on Friday in Lagos while officially lighting the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA 2022) Torch at the University of Lagos, Akoka- the host university. A 34-year-old man, Godwin Iroro, has been arrested by police detectives attached to the Ajegunle Division in Lagos State for defiling his friend’s 10-year-old daughter (name withheld). The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami has been inaugurated as the 15th President of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administration (CATA) at the weekend in London, United Kingdom. Plans to restart night tube services on London Underground will be disrupted by strike action on Saturday. It said drivers could choose whether to work on night services, whereas the transport authority has said drivers should work four nights a year. “Our members have spoken and it’s time for London Underground to start listening. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it has suspended some officials for allegedly extorting a passenger at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, disclosed this in a statement in Lagos on Saturday. Yakubu said the action was in line with management’s determination to rid the nation’s airport of corrupt officials. According to her, the officials are staff of Aviation Security and Customer Service departments of the Authority, and have been suspended. She said that the On Duty Card of their accomplice from the Nigeria Immigration Service had been withdrawn.

The British scientist who led the research underpinning AstraZeneca’s coronavirus jab said Saturday a new vaccine could be developed against the emerging Omicron variant “very rapidly” if needed. Professor Andrew Pollard, the director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, also said existing vaccines should work against the new strain, but that would only become apparent after more research in the coming weeks. The United States and European countries have followed suit on the restrictions, and the variant has been confirmed in Belgium. The UK-based drugs company said it was “already conducting research in locations where the variant has been identified”. Vaccine makers Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax have also said they are confident of being able to combat the Omicron strain.

THE 18 suspected criminals arrested in Ondo State with over 500 daggers and other weapons concealed under the seat of their vehicles have been arraigned and remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure. The security outfit had found over 500 knives and daggers concealed in a sack filled with tiger nuts inside the vehicle in which the suspects were travelling and promptly arrested all the occupants of the vehicle. The arrest came a few days after soldiers from the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, withdrew from checkpoints and interstate boundaries across the state. The suspects claimed to have taken off from Kastina State in three 18-seater passenger buses before arriving in Ondo State and refusing to stop at every checkpoint within the state. “But we later organised a complete blockage before the Akure Garage in Ondo town and we were able to apprehend them.

THE Federal Government on Friday said its determination to crush banditry remains unwavering now that the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted its application to declare bandits groups as terrorist organisations.
