Smartmatic data ‘breach’ part of scam on politicians, probers bare
MANILA, Philippines — The “data breach” suffered by election system provider Smartmatic was actually part of a scam hatched by hackers to con unscrupulous politicians into believing they could manipulate the elections. Mancao said they peddled their scam by presenting old voters’ data that Smartmatic used to prepare for the elections and was stored in a laptop computer that was supposedly stolen by former Smartmatic employee Ricardo Argana. Argana, who initially surrendered to the National Bureau of Investigation but was eventually released, was allegedly paid P300,000 by Limpiado, the scam’s alleged mastermind, for the Smartmatic data. The data appeared current because they included voters’ personal details, their precincts and voting history, but actually had nothing to do with the May 9 elections, Mancao said. Sinag Pag-asa project commits lighting of evacuation centers
This emphasizes the significance of evacuation centers which serve as a temporary shelter for communities who fall victim to disaster displacement. With schools, community spaces and sports facilities often repurposed to provide people with respite from the events of extreme weather, many evacuation centers frequently encounter a problem: a lack of reliable lighting. The project aims to provide evacuation centers with access to solar and electric floodlights, light tubes and rechargeable light bulbs for use during emergencies and crises. Initial beneficiaries include at least 63 evacuation centers across Metro Manila, Cavite, and Batangas, with more recipients reaching the whole month of March. Mainland care worker found dead in Tsim Sha Tsui hotel room
A woman aged about 50 was found dead in a Tsim Sha Tsui hotel on Thursday afternoon. It was understood that she was a mainland care worker hired by the Social Welfare Department. Police received a report from staffers of B P International in Tsim Sha Tsui at 1.24pm on Thursday, saying a woman aged about 50 passed out in her room. Medics rushed to the hotel only to pronounce the woman dead at the scene. Sources said the woman had received the booster jab and had been staying in B P International since March 7.

Arrested hackers obtained voters’ data, says cybercrime center chief
MANILA, Philippines —The three arrested hackers who claimed that they could manipulate the outcome of the May 9 elections have managed to gain access to registered voters’ data, the chief of Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said on Thursday. CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Cezar Mancao II said they discovered this after CICC agents posed as clients keen on purchasing the stolen data. Another 52,000 Ukrainians flee war as refugees
GENEVA, Switzerland – More than 5.3 million Ukrainians have fled their country since Russia invaded two months ago, the United Nations said Wednesday, with more than 52,000 joining their ranks in the past 24 hours. In total, 5,317,219 people have fled Ukraine as refugees since February 24, according to the latest data from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. While the outflow has slowed significantly since March, UNHCR has projected that three million more Ukrainians could become refugees by the end of the year. Before the war, Poland was home to around 1.5 million Ukrainians, chiefly migrant workers. UNHCR said that between February 28 and April 26, Ukrainian border guards had registered 1,209,500 Ukrainians returning to the country.

A two-second frame in the movie contains an image of the so-called nine-dash line, which marks China's claims in the South China Sea, a strategic waterway. In 2019, the Philippines' foreign ministry requested DreamWorks to shut down cinema screenings of animated film "Abominable" after a scene showed the same Chinese nine-dash line.
