The displacement among workers occasioned by the invasion of robots and computers has far-reaching social and economic implications. It basically means unemployment for the displaced workers. As in sin taxes where government derives support for certain public health programs, revenues that can be derived from robot taxes can be used to create conditions that help generate employment for displaced workers, or promote training or capacity-building activities that would enable the displaced workers to find alternative sources of livelihood. Investments in health, climate change and income inequalities, among other current development issues, can generate opportunities for the displaced workers. It argues for taxation of robots that applies the principles of efficiency, equity, stabilization of international capital markets, and administrative feasibility."

PARIS — French Prime Minister Jean Castex said Tuesday that his government would tender its resignation if Emmanuel Macron is re-elected president, in a bid to provide a “new impetus” for Macron’s centrist party ahead of parliamentary elections in June. Macron is facing a close race in the run-off on Sunday against far-right veteran Marine Le Pen, with analysts warning that low turnout could prove a wildcard even though most polls show Macron in the lead. ADVERTISEMENTIf he is re-elected, “in the subsequent days, as is the tradition, I will present the president with my resignation and that of the government,” Castex told France Inter radio. “The game isn’t over yet and we certainly can’t draw conclusions… that this election, this match, is already decided,” Castex said. SHANGHAI: China reported seven new deaths from Covid-19 in Shanghai on Tuesday, raising the official toll after hundreds of thousands of cases in the metropolis during a weeks-long lockdown. City authorities revealed the first virus deaths on Monday, with Tuesday's fatalities bringing the total official toll to just 10, despite the scale of the outbreak. Shanghai health officials noted Sunday that less than two-thirds of residents over 60 had received two Covid jabs and less than 40 percent had received a booster. Hong Kong, meanwhile, has attributed nearly 9,000 deaths to Covid-19 since the Omicron variant surged there in January. It also reported more than 20,000 new Covid cases, the vast majority asymptomatic.
