Eastern Court on Friday adjourned the Sai Ying Pun cabbie murder case until December, with the suspect remanded in custody. Matthew Choi Naam-sang, 31, is accused of murdering a 48-year-old taxi driver in Sai Ying Pun on October 12. At a hearing on Friday, the prosecution said it had obtained Choi’s psychiatric reports and he was fit to enter a plea. Fire Services Department officers, along with police officers have smashed an illicit refueling station in Kwai Chung on Friday morning. The joint operation on Kwai Wo Street saw two individuals arrested and about 3,300 liters of suspected illicit motor spirit with an estimated market value of about HK$30,000 seized. The duo, a man and a woman, suspected to be in connection with the case were arrested for violating the Fire Services (Fire Hazard Abatement) Regulation, Dangerous Goods Ordinance, and the Dangerous Goods Regulations. The law enforcement officers also seized two lorries used to store the illicit motor spirit and a batch of oil refilling apparatus. Five illegally modified vehicles were also impounded during the operation.

ITBAYAT, BATANES — Batanes registered no new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and only one case on Thursday as infections continued to drop in the island province, data from the local pandemic response task force showed. Since recording its first community transmission on Sept. 16, the province’s active cases fell to its lowest on Thursday after 19 more recoveries brought down its active infections to only 60. On Oct. 27, the health department logged 3,218 new infections, the lowest since May 23, when the country recorded 3,083 new cases. The number of active COVID-19 cases has also been dropping this month. The decreasing number of COVID-19 cases has eased the Philippines to low-risk status as of Oct. 25, according to DOH. Despite decreasing COVID-19 cases, the Philippines lagged behind its neighbor Southeast Asian countries due to its slow vaccine progress. “Although the number of new COVID-19 cases reported in recent days has been declining, we should not be complacent,” the DOH reminded in its latest bulletin.
