The surge in Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) stock market value beyond US$1 trillion on Monday is a double bonanza for Chief Executive Elon Musk, the electric car maker's largest shareholder. The stock rallied 12.7 percent on news that Tesla landed its biggest-ever order from rental car company Hertz. That stake includes options worth over US$50 billion that have vested under Musk's 2018 compensation package. Musk receives no salary at Tesla: his pay package provides 12 options tranches that vest when Tesla's market capitalization and financial growth hit a series of rising milestones. The options let Musk buy Tesla shares at US$70 each, a discount of more than 90 percent from their current price.

MANILA, Philippines — The government will give cash grants totaling P1 billion to about 178,000 registered drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) such as jeepneys and buses to help mitigate the impact of high oil prices. But senators on Monday criticized the lack of government programs for drivers reeling from the effects of high fuel prices. Poe played down DOTr officials’ claim that it was set to expand its service contracting program to soften the impact of high fuel prices. He called on the DOTr to also heed the call of various transport groups for a fare increase to cushion rising prices. “The steep rise in fuel prices requires the government to act fast.

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines has now over 94 million doses of coronavirus vaccine—55 million already administered—but has fully vaccinated only 23.24 percent of the target population or 25.6 million Filipinos. The Philippines has a seven-day average of 478,368 doses administered each day, less than the 523,018 doses in August. As of Oct. 23, 94,678,340 doses had been given to the Philippines. Bantay Bakuna said these were “enough to vaccinate 42.9 percent or about 47,300,000 Filipinos.” However, only 55,290,473 doses had been administered. Republic Act 11525, or the “COVID-19 Vaccination Program Act of 2021”, states that private companies and local governments are authorized to procure vaccines which have been given Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).

In the hearing before judge Albert Wong Sung-hau yesterday, the defense said X proposed to have sex with Lam and in exchange he would purchase insurance products from her. The defense also accused X of telling Lam that having sex in exchange for customers agreeing to buy insurance products would allow both of them to get what they need. She denied having consensual sex with Lam, adding she left his flat after taking a shower following the alleged rape. But X denied the claim and suspected Lam had planned to take her home to rape her. "Lam pretended he wanted to buy the insurance and raped me as if I was his prey," she said.

MELBOURNE: Unvaccinated players will be allowed to compete at the Australian Open but must do 14 days in quarantine, according to a leaked WTA email on Monday, although a government official insisted the matter was "not settled." The email to players from the women's governing body was leaked to New York Times tennis writer Ben Rothenberg, who posted it on Twitter, and contradicts officials' earlier statements implying unvaccinated players would not be granted visas. The email said that players fully inoculated against coronavirus would not have to quarantine or remain in bio-secure bubbles, enjoying "complete freedom of movement." Unvaccinated players can come to Australia but would have to undergo two weeks' mandatory hotel quarantine and submit to regular testing, it stated. Tennis Australia told AFP it was "optimistic that we can hold the Australian Open as close to pre-pandemic conditions as possible."

This handout photo obtained May 26, 2021, courtesy of Pharmaceutical company Merck shows capsules of the experimental antiviral drug Molnupiravir. "EMA's human medicines committee (CHMP) has started a rolling review of the oral antiviral medicine molnupiravir... developed by Merck Sharp & Dohme in collaboration with Ridgeback Biotherapeutics for the treatment of Covid-19 in adults," the European Medicines Agency said in a statement. Antivirals like molnupiravir work by decreasing the ability of a virus to replicate, thereby slowing down the disease. The EMA will now assess whether molnupiravir complied to European standards of efficacy, safety and quality. It can take several months between the start of a rolling review by the EMA and any eventual green light.

23.58% of population fully vaccinated against COVID-19Health Undersecretary Roger Tong-an administers a COVID-19 vaccine on an adolescent during the ceremonial program of the expanded inoculation efforts at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center on October 22, 2021MANILA, Philippines — Government figures show that 25.71 million Filipinos have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 since the life-saving jabs were first rolled out in March. This is equivalent to 23.58% of the country's total population, a long way from the 90% health authorities say must be fully vaccinated to attain herd immunity. Figures as of October 24 also show that 30 million individuals — around 27.51% of the people — have received a first dose of the vaccine. The government has consistently failed to reach its previous daily target of administering 500,000 shots a day, averaging 487,398 doses in the last seven days. Authorities recently tripled their elusive target, now set at 1.5 million jabs per day.

Gov't to spend P1-B in cash aid for PUV drivers amid high oil pricesThis photo taken on May 11, 2020 shows a driver installing seat dividers in his passenger jeepney to comply with government-imposed social distancing rules against the COVID-19 coronavirus in Manila. MANILA, Philippines — The government will spend P1 billion to provide fuel subsidy to Public Utility Vehicles (PUV) drivers reeling from rallying oil prices that, if left unchecked, could stoke inflation and hurt a fragile economic recovery. The move came at a time transport groups are proposing fare hikes to help them weather the impact of stubbornly high oil prices. Last week, prices of gasoline went up by P1.80 per liter while diesel and kerosene got more expensive by P1.50/liter and P1.30/liter, respectively, as soaring demand and tight supply continue to push up global oil prices. But the Department of Transportation rejected the appeal, saying a fare hike at this time could hurt commuters.
