President Ruto’s recent historic state visit to the US was a testament to this approach. Ruto has echoed the sentiments recently expressed by a senior Rwandan diplomat saying that his country will not be “bullied” into taking sides in the superpower rivalry between the US and China. James Kimonyo, Rwanda’s ambassador to China, said in an interview with South China Morning Post that both Washington and Beijing were important partners for the East African country. We think China is a very good friend of ours and nobody can tell us otherwise,” the diplomat said. In his recent analysis at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI), he argues that “China’s domestic economic problems have opened the door for the United States to change the influence dynamics in Africa if the government is willing to step up to the plate.”

The Madani Resistance Committee, a grassroots group set up to protect residents in the capital city of Gezira, said that the RSF, which has been fighting the Sudanese army for over a year, used heavy artillery to besiege and attack the village, displacing residents, including women and children, to other parts of the district of al-Manaqil. The Sudanese transitional government in a statement condemned the RSF’s attacks and called for the international community to hold the paramilitary group accountable. With the violence in Sudan escalating, calls are mounting on both the RSF and the Sudanese army to allow access by air workers to the people in need. “Time is running out for millions of people in Sudan who are at imminent risk of famine,” the United Nations and humanitarian organizations warned this week in a joint statement. “Despite the tremendous needs, aid workers continue to face systematic obstructions and deliberate denials of access by parties to the conflict.” UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Alice Nderitu, joined the chorus of outrage over the situation, saying “civilians are being attacked and killed because of the color of their skin, because of their ethnicity, because of who they are,” whereby this situation bore “all the marks of risk of genocide.”

Morocco’s flag carrier RAM is considering reopening direct flights between Casablanca and Beijing, after a four-year pause that started with the outbreak of Covid 19, a RAM source said. With the expected increase in its fleet, RAM would relaunch direct Morocco-China flights in early 2025, a RAM source told Hespress. RAM used to operate three weekly flights to Beijing in 2020, before marking a halt due to the outbreak of Covid 19. Direct flights would encourage Chinese tourists to visit the Kingdom. The number of Chinese tourists increased from about 15,000 annually to 132,000 in 2018, after Morocco canceled visa requirements for Chinese nationals in 2015.

The first Google Cloud data center on the African continent has been up and running since January in Johannesburg, South Africa. Africa's first fiber-optic route to AustraliaGoogle had committed $1 billion in 2022 to driving Africa's digital transformation — including undersea cables for faster internet connections. Anchored in Kenya, the fiber-optic cable will run through Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, from where it will continue along the Indian Ocean bed to Australia. Key players in African internet infrastructure include multinational telecom giants such as MTN (South Africa), Orange S.A. (France), Vodafone Group (UK) and Bharti Airtel (India). Leapfrogging is also taking place in the expansion of internet infrastructure, when high-capacity fiber-optic cables are immediately laid instead of the copper cables that were initially used in the Global North.

press releaseAcross the Middle East and North Africa region, the criminalization of consensual same-sex relations and diverse gender expressions persists, subjecting people identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) to widespread human rights abuses. The fight to abandon laws that criminalize same-sex relations and ensure equality for all may overlook other oppressive practices employed by states to "legally" harass and prosecute LGBT people. In Egypt, while consensual same-sex relations are not explicitly criminalized, vaguely defined laws related to public morality provide a pretext for discriminatory treatment. In Jordan, where consensual same-sex relations have been decriminalized since 1951, the absence of robust legal protections leaves LGBT people vulnerable to state-sanctioned discrimination. Decriminalization of same-sex relations should include all the necessary legislative measures that not only prohibit bias and discrimination, but that guarantee accountability, justice, and protection from harmful and inhuman treatment.

If not, I’ll leave for Europe,” said Abdoulaye Diallo, a 40-year-old from Guinea, speaking at a nearby migrant compound in late April. Niger’s military leaders in November scrapped a European Union-backed law that criminalised people who aided migrants. Over 128,790 migrants were observed leaving Niger in March, 68% more than in March 2023, according to Reuters calculations based on the most recent data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), a UN agency. The UN agency is not expecting migrant flows on this route from North Africa to rise dramatically in the coming months, he said. The EU said last year it was investing 800 million euros across North Africa until 2024 to tackle the problem.
