When It Comes to Alliances, Latin America Has a Commitment Problem
Last month, Colombia announced that it will apply for membership in the BRICS, and Argentina formally requested to become one of NATO’s global partners. After all, in 2014, Colombia under then-President Juan Manuel Santos was seen as the United States’ strongest ally in Latin America. Meanwhile, Argentina under then-President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was a member in good standing of the “Pink Tide,” while taking loans from China and considering a rapprochement with Iran to boot. The shifts announced last month are a sign of Latin America’s changing diplomatic alliances, but it would be a mistake to read too much into them. As a result of the diplomatic efforts of Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Argentina—at the time led by Lula’s ally, former President Alberto Fernandez—was one of six countries that received an invitation.

Four steps MENA must take to develop intelligent economies
AI, particularly generative AI, is receiving a lot of attention, after leaping to the forefront of the wider consciousness during 2023 through apps like ChatGPT. These models are expected to develop to the point where they significantly boost productivity and growth, empower individuals, and address major social challenges. The region is already using AI to address specific problems, including MENA’s rapidly dwindling supply of potable water. Growing water scarcity is a well-documented problem and it is estimated that by 2050, MENA will need an extra 25 billion cubic metres of water annually. Currently, AI is being used to make the desalination process more cost effective and energy efficient.

12 Nigerian startups selected for 2nd Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship
Co-creation Hub (CcHub) has announced the selection of 12 innovative ed-tech startups to join the second cohort of the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship, which provides industry support and funding to empower startups driving change in Africa’s education landscape. Disrupt Africa reported in February 2023 CcHub had announced a new partnership with the Mastercard Foundation under the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship Programme to launch a US$15 million ed-tech accelerator initiative in Kenya and Nigeria. The fellowship provided initial support to 12 Nigerian startups in 2023, as well as 12 Kenyan companies, and is now back for its second year. The cohort is completed by AI-enabled learning platform for the visually-impaired Vinsighte; social-emotional learning platform IM FLOW; career development platform WIFICOMBAT; and online learning service Skill Up With Kahdsole. “After a rigorous application and selection process, we are enthusiastic about the potential of the selected startups to enhance the face of ed-tech in the region.

Biocartis announced an expansion of its collaboration with Merck Serono Middle East and Merck Saudi Ltd., both affiliates of Merck KGaA ("Merck"). The collaboration aims to improve patient access to RAS biomarker testing in the Middle East and North Africa (MEA) region. Biocartis Expands Partnership With Merck In Middle East And North Africa

Aegean Airlines to distribute dividend
This winter, Aegean Airlines is offering the largest route schedule in its history, which includes 18 new routes in 14 countries. The flights to Dubai will be carried out six times a week from November 10, with the airline, which records a significant demand for this destination, seeking to attract more passengers on transit flights. Aegean Airlines will distribute a dividend for the first time after four years for fiscal 2023, it said this week. Google opens applications for Startups AI Accelerator Africa
Google has announced the opening of applications for the eighth cohort of its Google for Startups Accelerator Africa programme, which will have a strong focus on startups leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to address critical challenges and unlock new opportunities across the continent. The Google for Startups Accelerator Africa is a three-month, equity-free virtual programme that provides African startups with mentorship, technical resources, and access to a global network of experts and investors. Since its inception in 2018, the programme has supported 106 startups from 17 African countries. “We’re excited to support the next generation of African AI pioneers through the Google for Startups Accelerator, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to build successful, impactful businesses” said Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of startups ecosystem for Africa at Google.
