First published: 04-Jun-2024 08:04:58Staff WriterVenture capital (VC) investments in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region could rebound this year after a slowdown, thanks to a low interest rate environment, according to a new report. The consultancy firm noted that, as interest rates are expected to fall, initial public offerings (IPOs) and deal-making are poised for a turnaround. “This impending shift has the potential to breathe new life into initial public offerings (IPOs) and M&A deals, reigniting investor confidence and deal-making momentum,” the firm said. If interest rates drop, borrowing costs could be cheaper and this will incentivise businesses to “pursue expansionary strategies such as mergers and acquisitions,” according to Alexey Bogdanov, Partner at Tenet Consulting. Lower interest rates generally translate to cheaper borrowing costs,” he said.

The city of Tiaret in western Algeria has been rocked by violent clashes as citizens take to the streets torching tires and protesting water cuts. Videos shared on social media showed Tiaret citizens blocking roads and denouncing 20 days of water outage, after a dam that supplies the city went empty. Algeria’s media, mostly mouthpieces of the military regime, turned a blind eye to the incidents and the water crisis that also engulfed large western cities such as Oran. In the second largest city, water rationing is now the norm with total cuts that last for days. Instead of acting on the water problems, the Algerian regime indulges in exaggeration and fake news.

Algeria wants to lure more visitors to the cultural and scenic treasures of Africa's largest country, shedding its status as a tourism backwater and expanding a sector outshone by competitors in neighboring Morocco and Tunisia. But while tourist-friendly Morocco welcomed 14.5 million visitors in 2023, bigger, richer Algeria hosted just 3.3 million foreign tourists, according the tourism ministry. Saliha Nacerbay, General Director of the National Tourism Office, outlined plans to attract 12 million tourists by 2030 - an ambitious fourfold increase. Tourism and travel provided 543,500 jobs in Algeria in 2021, according to the Statista website.
