Hours after the historic landings had begun, a late edition of the Belfast Telegraph declared it was "Europe's greatest day". "In this brief manner the United Nations, their enemies, and the peoples of neutral nations, were told that 'The Day' had arrived," the Belfast Telegraph reported. The day after D-Day, 7 June, more information was being relayed to anxious families in towns and villages across Ireland. Such memories of bombing raids would have remained raw in Northern Ireland after the Blitz. A reminder of this can be seen in the top masthead of the Belfast Telegraph which informed readers of the black-out times to abide by.

The launches are escalating animosities, with South Korea suspending a tension-easing deal with North Korea and preparing to resume frontline military activities. North Korea had halted its flights of rubbish-carrying balloons but threatened to resume them if South Korean activists sent leaflets again. The South Korean civilian group, led by North Korean defector Park Sang-hak, said it floated 10 balloons tied to 200,000 anti-Pyongyang leaflets, USB sticks with K-pop songs and South Korean dramas and one-dollar U.S. bills from a border town on Thursday. In reaction to the North’s balloon campaign, South Korea fully suspended a 2018 tension-easing agreement with North Korea. North Korea has previously responded to such flyovers of advanced U.S. aircraft with provocative missile tests.

The “Northern Star,” the 1.5°C limit, was the closest compromise scientists could reach, given the momentum of the free market economy, which was and still is based on fossil fuels. The 1.5°C temperature limit was not a target or prize but a dangerous threshold that should not be crossed at any cost. Above all, you don’t respect a limit when you stand to lose $7 trillion in subsidies per year alone. Just setting the 1.5°C limit was an invitation to break it. Now, as we are crossing the 1.5°C threshold, we simply confirm that it was never a promise of paradise but a door to hell on earth.

Empowering Arab Artists: Suhel Nafar, Head of Empire West Asia/North AfricaSuhel Nafar speaks to his journey and influence in the global music scene, focusing on his work with EMPIRE’s West Asia/North Africa division to promote Arab artists worldwide. When I was at Spotify, I noticed a gap in female artist representation, which was around 2 to 3%. In 2023, at Empire, out of over 400 artists we distributed, 40% were female artists. One thing that artists need to understand is that they need to find the right deal. Other than that, Empire artists had almost 200 covers and banners across various platforms in 2023.

The analysis does not include the potential impact of COVID-19 on diabetes prevalence and burden. The authors primarily report on diabetes prevalence and burden; however, they also provide mortality estimates in the analysis. The investigators found that North Africa and the Middle East had an age-standardized total diabetes prevalence of 9.3%, and Oceania had the highest regional age-standardized prevalence of 12.3%. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the main driver of the global diabetes burden, accounting for nearly all diabetes cases (96%) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). After four years in office without any major economic or diplomatic achievement, President Tebboune of Algeria has already started his premature electoral campaign touring the country. In 2019, amid the pro-democracy protests that ousted ailing president Bouteflika, Tebboune was the civilian curtain of then Algerian kingmaker General Gaid Saleh. Soon after the sudden death of Gaid Saleh, Tebboune survived a purge into Gaid Saleh men in the regime, by pledging allegiance to new military ruler Chengriha. Had Putin delayed his invasion of Ukraine, Algeria could have been already in negotiations with the IMF for a structural adjustment. At the economic level, Algeria’s economic edifice stands on one pillar: gas.

Nigeria is reinforcing security to tackle oil theft and the vandalism targeting its onshore pipeline and oil fields, but the issue is still far from being resolved. In April, Nigeria recruited 1,486 personnel to boost internal security operations in the country’s crude production heartland, according to local media sources. Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer with an average 1.8 million barrels daily. But attacks by armed groups and theft forced many firms like Shell and Exxon to sell their assets. Nigerian oil and gas management analyst Aminu Ghandi told DW that oil theft is becoming very lucrative for perpetrators.
