MONROVIA – The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), will on Friday, January 22, 2021, hold a validation conference to access and evaluate laws that are hindering and undermining the effective fight against corruption in public and private institutions. These laws and acts of the National Legislature including the Statute of Limitation in pursuing criminal actions against public officials and the weaknesses in the criminal Laws have over the years restrained from cases of corruption especially against public officials. The LACC Board of Commissioners (BoC) have done an extensive review of several Acts of the National Legislature and Criminal Law and urgently seeks to amend aimed at strengthening the law to ensure successful criminal prosecutions. The LACC views the Act that established it as restraining, as it does not empower the Commission with absolute power and authority to prosecute public officials caught in the web of financial misappropriation and corruption. The validation process is expected to bring together professionals from diverse backgrounds and other integrity institutions in Liberia.

Monrovia – United States new President, Joe Biden has signed into law an Executive Order granting protection for thousands of Liberians whose status have expired under former President Donald Trump’s Defense Bill signed in December 2019. The Executive Order extends the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) designated for Liberians in the U. S. until June 30, 2022, a relief for thousands of Liberians whose legal status expired in December 2020 under the law. It was among several Executive orders signed by President Biden on his first day in office, few hours following his and VP Kamala Harris’ ‘historic’ inauguration in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, according to CBS news. For over two decades, thousands of Liberian immigrants have lived with uncertainty in the United States after fleeing civil war in the 1990s and early 2000s. But advocates argued the excessive application fees blocked more Liberians from acquiring green cards until the term expired in December 2020, leaving thousands of Liberians’ fates in limbo.

EDITORIAL: Raising Taxes At The Expense Of The Poor – The Audacity of APM Terminals in LiberiaTHE ONGOING DEBATE over the APM Terminals offers a perfect opportunity for those in the corridors of power to correct the flawed concession now causing headaches for Liberians. WE ARE APPALLED at the audacity of APM Terminal’s flimsy explanation that the increment was in line with its concession agreement with the government of Liberia which allows a 2021 tariff adjustment using predefined formula. FROM ALL INDICATION, the concession with APM terminals was bad from the start. THE BOTTOM LINE is that APM Terminals can no longer continue to increase tariff on struggling businesses and ordinary Liberians. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD not stand by and allow APM Terminals to repeatedly raise taxes at will to the detriment of its own people.
