Equities investors at the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), last week earned N323 billion as the benchmark index inched up by 1.37 per cent. A real estate expert, Adebowale Adesote, has warned against the use of substandard materials to prevent the recurrence of collapsed buildings in the country. He said, “In Nigeria, common law principles and practices govern and regulate contracts for designs and building works. In a design or construction contract, the fundamentals of common law agreements, parties, intentions and considerations must be in place. Many states in Nigeria have laws regulating contracts which are codified in common law principles of the land as by-laws. “Architects, engineers and contractors must follow this fundamental common law in building to prevent a recurrence of building collapse in the country.”Adesote added that his company was committed to providing affordable building materials and low-cost housing schemes using their expertise to create accessible and durable homes.

THE report that the Federal Government has introduced an excise duty of N10/liter on all non-alcoholic, carbonated, and sweetened beverages is currently trending and generating reactions and counter-reactions across Nigeria. As a quick clarification to readers who might not understand what excise duty means, excise duty is a form of tax imposed on the production, licensing, and sale of goods. Certain reports have it that sometimes in the year 2020, Hameed Ali, the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), had also proposed the collection of excise duty on soft drinks. The government has since discussed several reasons that necessitated the introduction of the said excise duty in the finance act. Plastic pollution in Nigeria has gotten to worrisome levels and a sustainable model that can be seamlessly integrated into the country’s extended producer’s responsibility policy is highly recommended.

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, has called on the National Assembly and the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), to pass the electoral bill so that INEC can hit the ground running towards the 2023 elections. INEC made 36 recommendations in the new electoral bill. He however lamented that direct primaries may also be problematic because of the loopholes within the system.
