A seasoned scholar, Prof. Michael Kremer, has canvassed the adoption of NewGlobe’s teaching and learning methodology across the nation’s public schools for greater efficiency and effectiveness. Kremer, a Nobel Prize winner in economics, in an independent study, said children living in underserved African communities could receive 5.3 per cent more learning in schools supported by NewGlobe learning methodology. She assured that the organisation is well-positioned to support state governments in achieving improved learning outcomes while employing new techniques and proven methodologies to yield better results. Already, she said some states had implemented the methodology to transform learning outcomes in their public schools, including early childhood, primary and junior secondary schools. Kwara State governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazak, described the learning methodology as a lifetime investment that empowers teachers and gives public schools the best shot at 21st-century education.

Meta’s system of appeals against its decisions to remove content on Facebook and Instagram received roughly 1.1 million cases in its first year. The disputed posts, most of which originated in the US, Canada or Europe, had largely been removed for either violence, hate speech or bullying. Of the 20 cases about which The Oversight Board published decisions, it ruled against Meta 14 times. It had initially shortlisted 130 cases to investigate, but Meta agreed up front that it had been wrong on 51 of those occasions. Anybody – including Meta itself – can appeal to it if they disagree with a decision to remove content.

The death toll in the powerful earthquake that struck a remote border region of Afghanistan overnight, has reached 1000, leaving several injured. Even before the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan’s emergency response teams were stretched to deal with the natural disasters that frequently struck the country. The latest earthquake comes at a time when Afghanistan is battling a severe humanitarian disaster, worsened by the Taliban takeover of the country. Aid agencies and the United Nations say Afghanistan needs billions of dollars this year to tackle the crisis. Aid agencies have particularly stressed the need for greater disaster preparedness in Afghanistan, which remains extremely susceptible to recurring earthquakes, floods, and landslides.

The Federal Government has launched 20 high-capacity buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), to ease the transportation burden of civil servants in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). She stressed that the project would help reduce the cost of transportation of civil servants and further decongest the bus stops of civil servants around the Federal Secretariat, which is usually overcrowded during the close of work. Dr Yemi-Esan added that easing the transportation of civil servants has been one of the targets of her administration, adding that the government has always sought ways to achieve a healthier and safer environment for civil servants. “This pillar is targeted at addressing issues of the socio-economic wellbeing of civil servants, which if not tackled holistically, is capable of impeding the efficiency of workers,” she added. The Guardian had, on Monday, written to NNPC over the scarcity without any reply. The Guardian learnt that this was part of the reasons advanced by government officials for delaying the removal of subsidy. At any rate, if Ghana, Benin Republic, Chad, Cameroun and Niger Republic are not running fuel subsidies, why should Nigeria do it? Can they sell at the cost price and yet the NNPC is silent on the additional levies marketers are paying.
