THE emergence of the Omicron variant has highlighted the need to speed up and scale up the country's vaccination program, Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Jose Maria "Joey" Concepcion 3rd said on Tuesday. Concepcion made the statement as he expressed support for the government's decision to make Covid-19 tests mandatory for on-site workers as well as a proposal to make vaccination mandatory in the country. "With variants continuing to emerge, I believe it is time we aim for close to 100 percent vaccination in the country," Concepcion said in a statement. Concepcion said the national government's drive to vaccinate millions of Filipinos over three days during its National Vaccination Days is a proactive step that can help in slowing the spread of the virus. "I still believe while breakthroughs could increase with Omicron, vaccines can and will still prevent severe infections and hospitalization," he said.

The "democracy summit" due to be hosted by US President Joe Biden next week is reminiscent of cold war mentality. Given that Taiwan is unable to join the United Nations, Biden is creating a broad platform to include it in the international community. Instead, Tsai has asked digital minister Audrey Tang and Taiwan's top representative in Washington, Hsiao Bi-khim, to represent Taiwan at the summit. Perhaps there is a trade-off between the US and Taiwan, fearing the summit would go too far to anger Beijing. The list includes not only names but also a cold war styled diplomatic manoeuvre aimed primarily at China.

Police on Tuesday arrested eight people for selling cannabidiol (CBD) products that contained a banned cannabis chemical extract -- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The substance THC is regulated by the drug conventions of the United Nations, and selling products containing any concentration level of THC in Hong Kong is illegal. However, since CBD is generally extracted from cannabis, CBD products may contain THC. They seized 50 products containing CBD, such as beer, chocolate, cakes, e-cigarette, skincare products and supplements for examinations to see if any THC was detected in these products. They were reportedly the operators and staff members of the shops that sell the five illegal products.
