The Edo State Government has disclosed plans to set up a committee to monitor and audit orphanage homes in the state, threatening to close down and prosecute orphanage homes operating as businesses as against their designation as charities. The Commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Maria Edeko, who stated this on Monday, said the committee will formulate holistic policies on the management of orphanage homes and adoption, in line with the state’s child rights law. “They build orphanage homes with the intention to make a profit, rather than for charitable purposes. You will understand that the issue of human trafficking has been a very strong challenge globally and at the state level, Governor Godwin Obaseki has made serious efforts to stamp out human trafficking in Edo State. It is a charity and if you do not have the heart to do charity, you cannot be in the issue of managing orphanage homes.

The convener and the organising university plan to bring together both convergent and divergent African scholarly voices on universities in Africa, the frameworks of public university education in Africa, the models of private university governance in Africa, and how both the public and private universities can form a synergy to deliver quality university education to Africans and non-African scholars. This regional convening aims to explore how private universities influence the operations of public universities on the continent, among other things. However, innovation and strategic management are more popular concepts among private universities than public universities. Thus, the conference and its outcomes will greatly benefit efforts geared towards a strategic reform of public university education in Africa. Public education in Africa needs restructuring and reforms to position African public universities as worthy contenders with other universities across the world.

Three cases of exceptional air pollution across the globe that posed indeterminate danger stand out; the 1952 “Great Smog of London” which left 4,000 persons dead in weeks, the two-decade long air pollution of Beijing and other Chinese cities, and the 2018 New Delhi, Mumbai, and other Indian cities air pollution. Like in Beijing, a State Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan targeted at improving air quality and reducing soot pollution in a defined period must be developed and implemented in the states. The Federal Government, Rivers State and Bayelsa State governments must champion a solution to the soot problem. The laws must include stringent punishment and make individuals and communities vicariously liable for illegal refining in their areas. In conclusion, now is the time to work hard to solve the soot problem.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists on Sunday demanded the immediate and unconditional release of a journalist with Summit Post Newspaper, Nelson Omonu, who was whisked away by security operatives believed to be working on the orders of Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari. We’ve all walked gingerly into the uncharted dawn of 2022 hoping to make some sense of its covetous threats. The Congolese people say a good leader is a forest of fruits, everyone who goes there takes something good home. One day, King William seemed to be thinking of something that made him feel very sad; and the wise men who were about him asked him what was the matter. King William lay upon his death-bed, and again he thought of what would become of his sons when he was gone. So it happened in the end very much as the wise men had foretold.

Presently, only seven per cent of sensitive products (427 tariff lines) and three per cent of exclusive products (184 tariff lines) were negotiated rather than the other way. Indeed, it was agreed that there should be 90 per cent tariff liberalisation and the deadline was July 1, 2020. Over a 10-year period with a five-year transition, there will be an additional seven per cent for “sensitive products” that must be liberalised. This is even as raw commodities dominate items exported from the continent, the latest African Trade Report has shown. The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) urged the government to continue to liaise with the private sector in making AfCFTA operational.

Therefore, I won’t dwell on President Buhari and his regime in my inaugural article of 2022. Love is a four-letter word, and so is scam. Brizendine, a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, says while the female brain is driven to seek security and reliability in a potential mate before she has sex, the male brain is fuelled to mate and mate again…for life. The 69-year-old American scientist summarises her article in these words, “The best advice I have for women is to make peace with the male brain. I’m saying ladies lose their heads and hearts thinking marriage is in the bag when men propose with rings on bended knees.

As 2021 drew to a close, you may have been part of prayer sessions where prayers for enlargement were offered. One of the key lessons that you must learn in 2022 is that whatever you are looking for is already looking for you. To stand out from the pack of the common in 2022, you must pay the price to stretch and be stretched. Humble yourself and pay the price to learn from those who are already living in the reality of your dreams. Make the shift and watch things shift!

Sudanese security forces deployed in large numbers Sunday, setting up road blocks in the capital Khartoum amid calls for pro-democracy rallies in “memory of the martyrs” killed in recent protests. Activists use the internet for organising demonstrations and broadcasting live footage of the rallies. Hamdok was reinstated on November 21, but mass protests have continued as demonstrators distrust veteran general Burhan and his promises of seeking to guide the country toward full democracy. Those rallies have been repeatedly broken up by security forces firing rounds of tear gas, as well as charges by police wielding batons and shooting bullets into the air. On Thursday, five people were shot dead in Khartoum when security forces cracked down on mass rallies that saw tens of thousands take to the streets chanting “no to military rule”.
