The polytechnic lecturers in the country have expressed disappointment on both federal and state governments for leaving them on the salary structures they had been since 12 years ago, saying they were fed up with the situation. They also accused both levels of government of consistently paying lip service to the education sector from primary to tertiary levels, saying such attitude would continue to thwart the progress of Nigeria and its people. The President of their umbrella body, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Dr Anderson Ezeibe, gave these positions in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Tribune on Sunday. According to him, the polytechnic lecturers have been on the same salary structures which are even very small for the past 12 years and this situation is killing us. While noting that up till now Federal Government had not released the revitalisation funds and also about N5 billion minimum wage arrears owed the federal polytechnic lecturers nationwide several months after approval, the ASUP boss explained that the condition of state-owned polytechnic workers is worse.

Eleven soldiers were wounded and 29 “terrorists” neutralised in a weekend attack on security forces in Burkina Faso’s troubled northwest, the army said on Sunday. “The fighting caused injuries to 11 soldiers who were treated. Their response and counter-offensive allowed the neutralisation of 29 terrorists and the recovery of a large amount of combat materiel including weapons, vehicles and communication equipment,” the statement said. That attack was the deadliest since the bloodshed in Inata in the country’s north in mid-November, which claimed 57 lives including 53 police officers. Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been facing regular and deadly jihadist attacks, particularly in the northern and eastern regions, close to Mali and Niger, countries also battling armed jihadist groups.

I made my own New Year resolutions for the “Triple T year” of Twenty Twenty-Two (2022) a fortnight ago. “The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions some 4,000 years ago. Now popular within evangelical Protestant churches, especially African American denominations and congregations, watchnight services held on New Year’s Eve are often spent praying and making resolutions for the coming year. Common traditions include attending parties, eating special New Year’s foods, making resolutions for the New Year and watching fireworks displays. Some say yes, especially going by the dismal record of success usually recorded by many in fulfilling their New Year’s resolutions.

In an ideal situation, someone in her age bracket ought to be with her children and grandchildren and enjoying the comfort of a home with so much to eat and drink during the festive season. When Sunday Tribune eventually met Madam Sekinatu and some other beggars for a chat, her famished and peckish look advertised her protracted starvation. She said unlike Madam Sekinatu, she and her children spent their Christmas Day under the bridge rushing after anyone with goods to share. The orphanage was able to celebrate the festive season for all her children within the shelter facility as we organised Christmas parties and other festive activities to bring out the joy of the season,” she said. For Febisola Okonwo, the CEO of Tabitha Homes, in-house programmes were organised for the children during the festive season, as the home runs a holistic structure, making them feel loved and not feeling any less of themselves.
