OGUN State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said the breakdown of discussion between Dangote and the immediate past administration in the state led to the loss of a $16 billion Dangote refinery to Lagos State. He, however, said his administration is working towards ensuring that the state takes advantage of its oil rich deposit and becomes an oil producing state. “I worked as chairman of Olokola Free Trade Zone that was meant to have the Dangote refinery sited in Ogun Waterside. However, discussion broke down between Dangote and the then administration, which led to the loss of that project to Lagos State; a $16 billion project was lost to another state. If yes, what should be the framework or basis for ending the petrol subsidy regime and allowing market forces to determine the price of petrol per litre? For me, there is a strong case for the eventual deregulation of petrol price and hence eliminating the subsidy in it. I found this strange that a local new refinery was being discouraged by numerous hurdles to crude oil access while the NNPC is exporting crude oil. Very importantly too, for one key consideration, the government should be wary of deregulating petrol price that is influenced by imported petrol prices before the Dangote refinery comes on stream. Overall, the quest by the government to do away with the current regime of petrol subsidy, though understandable, needs to be handled cautiously.

However, systems and structures must be subject to an overall vision and crafted to serve people before people can be expected to give their loyalty. Systems don’t run themselves. Leaders who forget this will lose good people due to rigidity of a structure that may have lost its relevance. Leaders who are only good at managing structures don’t build people. Treat people well and they will in turn see to it that your business never suffers economic anemia.

Movement for Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has demanded that the Federal Government give special budgetary attention for the 2022 fiscal year to address developmental challenges facing oil-polluted Ogoniland in Rivers State. MOSOP-USA, in the demands on FG, also called for equal opportunities for Ogoni people in employment and sundry federal opportunities, lamenting that they have been neglected for too long, despite Ogoniland’s significant contribution to national growth over the years. “But in contrast, we have more than enough federal investments in Ogoniland capable of eliminating poverty and unemployment. The statement added: “If Ogoni is still considered part of Nigeria, MOSOP-USA, in collaboration with all Ogonis in diaspora, hereby call for full implementation of the above demands, as a matter of urgency from the Federal Government of Nigeria, or let Ogoni go. “Kindly be informed that FG’s refusal to implement these demands as of right, that are already being enjoyed by other ethnic groups in Nigeria, amounts to the declaration that Ogoni is not part of Nigeria,” MOSOP added.
