Zamfara State police command has rescued 21 Islamiyya school children from Rini town, Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara State, abducted by bandits on the eve of New Year in the state. The police also confirmed that the Islamiyya school teacher, Mallam Lawali Ibrahim and one driver were still with the abductors. Addressing newsmen on Saturday at the police headquarters in Gusau, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Shehu Mohammed, said the victims were rescued by security operatives after a gun duel with the bandits. According to him, the Islamiyya school children and their teacher were travelling to Dandume in Katsina State when the armed bandits blocked the highway and abducted many commuters along the road. “Police tactical operatives in conjunction with the military promptly responded to the distress call and moved to the scene where they engaged the bandits in a gun battle.

Three Bangladeshi peacekeepers were injured when their vehicle drove over a mine in Central African Republic’s troubled northwest, the UN mission said Saturday. Two were seriously hurt in Friday’s incident in Bohong in Ouham-Pende province more than 500 kilometres (310 miles) from the capital Bangui, the MINUSCA mission said. On Thursday, three Tanzanian peacekeepers were wounded in a mine explosion in the west. Mines have killed eight people, including two women and a five-year-old child, in the restive northwest since August, according to MINUSCA. After several years of a simmering continuation of the civil war that erupted in 2013, recent months have seen a spike in violence.

So, we wake up to 2022 and feast, drinking lavishly from the fountain of hope. I hope that the wind of common sense will start to blow over Nigerian sports. The institute shall also be a human laboratory, using elite athletes as guinea pigs. It is a critical part of the engine of elite athletes and sports development. I hope that Nigeria’s national sports federations will bring to an end the mental enslavement of their own coaches by hiring foreign coaches for the national sports teams.

A former Nigerian athlete and sports administrator, Brown Ebewele, is dead. Ebewele, a Nigerian former national champion introduced decathlon into the nation’s athletics in 1978, while competing as an athlete for the then Bendel State. Read AlsoAt the beginning of his athletics career, Ebewele competed for Lagos State as a junior athlete in the maiden edition of the National Sports Festival in 1973. Ebewele’s first competition for the then Bendel State was at Kaduna ‘77 edition of the National Sports Festival. Competing as a mature athlete, Ebewele won a gold medal for Bendel State and also set a national record in the hammer event in Kaduna.

Nigerians are hoping that a new electoral law would enhance the quality of elections and thus believe that the amendment to the electoral law by the National Assembly would fast-track this. However, as things stand today with Nigeria’s Electoral Act Amendment Bill (2021), it looks like the bill is a script in the hands of some wrong, thoroughly off-beam actors. The last time electoral amendment bill was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, he declined assent. That year, Nigerians may not readily remember that President Buhari refused to assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill three times. And now that it has become Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021, Nigeria has relapsed to the same old issues.

Militants terrorising the gas-rich northern Cabo Delgado province for the past four years have in recent weeks shifted their attacks to the west into Niassa. The latest displacements add to the more than 820,000 that have fled the insurgency in Cabo Delgado since 2017. Niassa province has since the end of November become the latest target for militants being driven from Cabo Delgado by African troops. The displaced have sought shelter in Mecula town, where they are housed at government schools or move in with relatives and friends. Another villager said women were kidnapped in the last known raid on Monday in Alassima village, around five kilometres from Mecula town.

The Federal Government has extended the NIN-SIM verification exercise by three months. This means that the earlier deadline of December 31, 2021, has moved to March 31, 2022. A statement jointly signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Ike Adinde and Head of Corporate Communications, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Kayode Adegoke, confirmed this development, Friday. According to the statement, NIN enrolments have exceeded 71 million as FG extends NIN-SIM Verification to March 31st, 2022. According to NCC and NIMC, as of December 30, 2021, the identity commission has over 14,000 enrolment centres set up across the country to facilitate and fast track the process.
